Nathan Egan, Conductor
Nathan Egan received his Bachelor's degree of music in Music Education from Brigham Young University; he graduated Magna Cum Laude in April of 2014. In his studies, he took private voice lessons with Carla Rae Cook, Darrell Babidge, Diane Reich, and Michele Scott. He also studied conducting with Dr. Ronald Staheli and Jean Applonie. His ensemble participation includes singing in the BYU Men's Chorus and the BYU Concert Choir, both conducted by Rosalind Hall. In addition, he sang a supporting role in BYU's production of Pirates of Penzance. In August 2021, he received a Masters of Music Education from BYU with a 4.0 GPA. His graduate studies included conducting with Dr. Andy Crane, and classical and contemporary voice with Dr. Joshua Lindsay and Korianne Orton Johnson. He also was a teaching assistant for the University Chorale, and completed a 90-page research project on effective home practice habits for choral students.
Throughout his career, Mr. Egan has taken beginning choirs to new levels of performance, and has maintained thriving choral programs. In his last semester at BYU, Mr. Egan was a student teacher at Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork, Utah. Under the direction of Cory J. Mendenhall, he conducted some of Utah's finest high school choirs, at the UMEA State Choral Festival, all of which received Superior ratings. Following his time at MMHS, Mr. Egan became the Director of Choirs at Mazama High School and Brixner Junior High School in Klamath Falls, Oregon. While at these schools, he helped build a choir program in an area that had seen little success and low behavioral expectations for years. Two of his choirs were selected to perform at State-level events for the first time in 7 years. The MHS Chamber Singers, an 8-member all-women's choir, won first place in their division at the OMEA State Ensemble Contest.
His years at Syracuse High have also been filled with rewarding experiences. In January of 2016, The SHS Madrigals performed for Tim Janis's Celebrate America; their recording at BYU broadcasting was aired on television as a part of this program. In the 2016-2017 school year, the Madrigals won the Classical 89 radio High School Choir Contest. As a result, they were featured on the live radio show Highway 89, including an interview with Steven Kapp Perry. In the 2020-2021 school year, A Cappella and Madrigals were featured choirs in the ACDA Utah virtual conference. SHS Choirs have often been invited choirs at conferences and festivals. In the 2022-2023 school year, the Madrigals were selected to perform at the UMEA Conference, a conference for all music teachers in the state. Throughout Mr. Egan's years at SHS, Madrigals, A Cappella, Caritas, and Men's Choir have continued to appear at their State Festivals each year.
Professionally, Mr. Egan and the SHS Choirs are ambassadors to the community in many capacities. Mr. Egan is an active clinician at various solo and ensemble, and choral festivals. At SHS, he is the Performing Arts Department Chair, which includes many responsibilities in supporting multiple thriving programs. He auditions students to sing the national anthem at football games to support the athletic programs at SHS, and is the vocal music director of the school musical each year. The SHS Choirs have performed for DSD School Board parties, DSD administrative luncheons, foreign dignitaries visiting SHS, local functions, and other events. In addition, he serves as the Utah High School All-State Choir Manger. In this role, he manages all logistical aspects of the Utah All-State Choir, including registration, music shipment, rehearsal organization, and concert preparation—serving around 650 students and 65 directors from across the state.
Mr. Egan is grateful and thrilled to work at Syracuse High School and to serve in his many roles. He loves to see how the choir program continues to build on its tradition of excellence; and knows that an in-depth, high-quality music education helps students to challenge their minds, invigorate their faculties, unlock their voices, and open their hearts.
